Audio Balance Test

Pan a steady tone anywhere between the left and right channels. With correct balance, the center position sounds like it is coming from directly in front of you.

Lower your volume before starting, especially with headphones. Nothing plays until you press a button.

How to use

  1. Sit centered between your speakers, or put your headphones on the correct ears.
  2. Press Play, then drag the balance slider from left to right.
  3. Set the slider to the center and check that the tone sounds evenly placed.
  4. Use Sweep to move the tone across automatically, or Alternate to hear each side in turn.

What this test can detect

  • A balance setting that is off center.
  • One channel that is quieter than the other.
  • Channels that are swapped.
  • Headphones worn on the wrong ears.

Important

  • Where a sound seems to come from also depends on your position, the room, and small differences between your ears.
  • Devices with a single speaker cannot show balance differences.
  • Fix balance in your operating system or device settings. This page only helps you hear the problem.
