Frequency Test

Play a single frequency, or sweep the whole range, to hear how your speakers and headphones handle bass, mids, and treble.

Lower your volume before starting, especially with headphones. Nothing plays until you press a button.

440 Hz

Above roughly 16 kHz many adults cannot hear the tone. That is normal.

How to use

  1. Start with the volume low. High and low frequencies can sound much louder or quieter than the middle of the range.
  2. Pick a preset or set an exact frequency, then press Play.
  3. Move through the range and note where the sound becomes quiet, distorted, or inaudible.
  4. Use Sweep to hear the full range rise from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

What this test can detect

  • Speakers that cannot reproduce deep bass or high treble.
  • Rattles and buzzing that appear only at certain frequencies.
  • A difference in output between the left and right side at some frequencies.
  • A rough idea of the upper limit of your own hearing.

Important

  • This is not a hearing test. If you are concerned about your hearing, see a professional.
  • Many small speakers cannot reproduce frequencies below about 100 Hz at all.
  • Loud tones at any frequency can damage hearing. Keep the volume moderate and stop if anything is uncomfortable.
