Motion & Ghosting Test

Objects moving across the screen reveal how quickly pixels change. Trails, halos and smeared edges behind a moving shape point to slow response times or aggressive overdrive.

The Bars and Lines patterns move high-contrast stripes across the screen and can flicker at higher speeds. Do not use them if you are sensitive to flashing lights or striped patterns, and pause the test or lower the speed if it bothers you.

Follow one square with your eyes. A faint copy trailing behind it is ghosting; a bright or dark fringe along its edges is an overdrive halo.

How to use

  1. Press Start test to go fullscreen, then follow the moving object with your eyes.
  2. Adjust the Speed slider. Faster motion makes trails easier to see; slower motion makes it easier to judge sharpness.
  3. Switch patterns. Blocks show trailing edges, Bars show smearing, Text shows readability in motion and Lines show overdrive halos.
  4. Press Invert to swap light objects on a dark background for dark objects on a light background, since each reveals a different kind of artifact.
  5. Use Pause to freeze the pattern and compare a still frame with the moving one.

What this test can detect

  • Ghosting: a faint copy of the shape trailing behind it.
  • Overdrive artifacts: a bright or dark halo, sometimes in a different color, leading or trailing the shape.
  • Smearing on dark transitions, common on VA panels.
  • General motion blur from a slow pixel response or a low refresh rate.

Important

  • Some blur is unavoidable on any sample-and-hold display, including OLED. Judge how the trail compares with a display you know.
  • The browser may not deliver every frame. Dropped frames look like stutter and are not a panel fault.
  • A phone camera can capture trails more consistently than the eye. What you see also depends on how well you track the object.
